Picking a Good Domain Name for SEO

Selecting the right domain name for your website is important, so you do want to spend some time brainstorming for options. However, don’t push it too far! You’ll want to take a day or two to think about the right domain name and then make a decision. Nowadays most domain names are already taken, so you might have to get a little creative.

Make it easy to spell and remember.

Although it doesn’t matter too much to search engines, you want your domain name to be easy to spell. Imagine you meet someone in an elevator and want them to take note of your domain name. Having someone write down software.sa.com is certainly easier than ShanxWebDev.com 🙂

From a technical perspective, it doesn’t matter whether your domain name ends in .com or not. However, it is still the most respected TDL (top level domain) and I highly suggest you get one if you want your brand to be taken seriously. Again, if you got another one, don’t drive yourself crazy. You’ll be fine.

Make it relevant.

Ideally, the domain name is just the name of your company, or it contains a word that describes what you do. This is not an absolute must. Think of companies such as Apple or Nest.

Maybe you have already bought a domain name. It’s probably okay to use it. If you do everything else right, your domain name will not prevent you from ranking well. I rank on the first page for the search phrase “web development San Antonio”,or “san antonio web development” even though my domain name is far from being perfect.
